The Tartan of the NWT

Designed at the request of the Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, Stuart Hodgson. Hugh MacPherson of Scotland and Janet Anderson-Thompson of Yellowknife designed the tartan which was recognised by Scotland in 1972 and adopted by the GNWT in 1973.

Tartan Colours:

Green - forests

White- frozen Arctic Ocean

Blue - Northwest Passage

Gold - mineral wealth

Reddish Orange - Autumn in barrens

Black line - Tree line

Malanka is a Ukrainian folk holiday celebrated on January 13th, which is New Year's Eve in accordance with the Julian calendar. Malanka commemorates the feast day of St. Melania.

The winner of the RioTinto Diavik diamond (November Raffle, 1st prize) is Sam Inaksajack from
Kugaaruk (Pelly Bay). The presentation was delayed until February 17 when Sam had an opportunity to come to Yellowknife to accept his prize

The "James Gang" served a mighty fine seniors' breakfast to end the month of January in style.

From February 4-6, 2010, St Patrick High School students will be performing the Broadway musical "Sugar" at NACC.

Here they performed at our Lunch with a Bunch (served by Weledeh School students) January 29. WOW!!

  Robert Burns.  Every January 25, the Scottish celebrate the birthday of their national poet, Robbie Burns Day! A special pudding is served called Haggis which has been cooked inside a sheep's stomach.

Jean Marshal from Bridgewater, NS sang to the joy of those who attended lunch Nov 20. The great meal was provided by George Gibson's crew & served by a group Katimavik volunteers, in town from Quebec, Ontario, Alberta & BC.

At our 16 October lunch with a bunch we were served by the 440 Transportation Squadron, with Aurora College B.Sc Nursing students Malerie Hardisty & Shawn Roper talking about lessening the possibilities of getting the H1N1 Flu. Avoid crowds, clean hands often & well, avoid touching mouth & nose & stay away from those with flu symptoms.

Gerda Groothiuzen did a Fire Prevention talk on Oct 9 (it was Fire Prevention week). Door prizes included tickets to The Legendary Platters, d onated by NACC.

Gladys and Albert did Lunch with the Bunch on Oct 9 and they had two girls
from the Katimavik Program.  Rose Crevier-Dagenais from
La Tuque, Que. and  Meagan Zunti from Castlegar, BC 

Fri Oct 2, featuring our guest speaker Rene Fumoleau, and the NWT Literacy Council helping us celebrate NWT Literacy Week.  10 copies of Rene Fumoleaus' book
"Here I Sit" were given away (door prizes).  Rene Fumoleau stayed to sign copies of his book for the lucky winners.
